Sexual harassment drove me out of Nollywood – Actress, Mary Uranta

In this interview, actress, Mary Data Uranta, speaks to the Sun Newspapers about her experience starting in the movie industry and the pressure exerted on her by producers who were only interested in taking her to bed.
Read excerpts of the interview below:
“At a point, sex became a condition for getting movie roles so I just took a walk. There were times when I missed getting roles because I wouldn’t succumb to pressure so I left and did other things including studying at the London School of Arts. But the passion was so strong I knew I just had to return so, I took time to look for professionals; people who would be interested in my talent and not taking me to bed,” she recalled.
However, the United Nation’s Peace Ambassador declares that sexual harassment is not a big deal today because it is a thing of choice. Hear her: “It’s a natural thing in the industry; men will always chase women so I don’t think it’s peculiar to Nollywood. It’s the same thing everywhere you go. I think those in the banks and other sectors also get harassed. So, it’s not what I love to discuss.
“Definitely, harassment will come but it’s a thing of choice. Movie or no movie, a producer can see you and get attracted to you. Same thing goes for an actor or marketer, so for me, it’s not a story to talk about.”
Childhood
Mary is an indigene of Okpobo but grew up in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. She lived all her life in Port Harcourt before relocating to Lagos to pursue a career in acting.
Commenting on her childhood, she said: “I had a great childhood. I never had it rough or tough growing up. Fine, I’m from an average home. But it’s never been bad. I had all I wanted as a child. I’m from a family of 13. Seven kids from my mum and four step brothers including mum and dad. It was fun growing up with my brothers and sisters, we were one happy family.
Passion driven
Right from childhood, Mary had always dreamed of being an actress so when she was in her teens she started shuttling between Lagos and Port Harcourt just to attend auditions.
“I’ve always loved acting,” she recalled. “I have been very passionate about it. I used to come to Lagos then from Port Harcourt just for auditions, my friends and I actually. We used to go to Asaba, Enugu, Owerri and even within Port Harcourt just to get auditioned. But after a while, I said to myself, ‘If Lagos is the place where it’s happening, I think I should just move to Lagos instead of coming and going.’ And that was it.”
Challenges
According to Mary, her journey into acting came with a lot of challenges because her parents were not down with it. “They had a way of coming up with good excuses about why I shouldn’t act so, I never had the full support at the initial stage from anyone around me. Actually, my parents didn’t have a problem with me doing it as far as it was in Port Harcourt. Probably that was because I was very young at the time,” she says
Consequently, Mary had to sneak to Lagos to attend auditions and also get an apartment in view of her plans to finally relocate to Lagos and pursue her dreams. “My coming to Lagos was even a problem. Initially, I didn’t tell my parents that I was relocating to Lagos. I came quietly, got a house, furnished it and was still going to Port Harcourt and back as if I was around. But later I had to tell my mum. And she was like ‘how would you cope all by yourself?’ But I assured her that I would cope. So, that’s how I became a Lagos girl. Ever since, I have never looked back,” the actress stated
First break
Mary got her first role ever in Port Harcourt and it was in Girls Hostel, a movie also starring Olu Jacobs, Ngozi Ezeonu, Uche Jombo, and Empress Njama. “I was still in school then. The movie was shot in Port Harcourt and the director came for an audition there, so I went with my friends who were in the Theatre Arts Department. They actually forced me to come with them. When we got there they each got a role in the movie and the director now turned to me and said ‘hey you, don’t you want to act?’ And I said ‘yes, I want to act’. I was very shy. He auditioned me for a role and surprisingly I did well. That’s how I got the role of a hall president in the movie. After that, we were brought to Lagos for another movie entitled, Silver Spoon and then another one entitled, Church Committee, and ever since I have never looked back,” she narrated.
Recounting further those years, the actress said: “Movies were very big then but at a point I stopped because I was still in school and my HOD was not down with my acting so she was always giving me problems. In fact, I had an extra year because of that and that was a big problem for me. But after school I took up the challenge. I told myself this is what I wanted to do and nothing could stop me.”
Secret Mission
However, Mary pointed to Secret Mission as the movie that gave her the big break in 2005. Hear her: “I played the lead in the movie. I played the role of Ngozi Ezeonu’s younger sister. There were also Desmond Elliot, Tonto Dikeh, Chioma Chukwuka and others. That movie stands out for me because I had problems interpreting the role.
“It was so bad I had to go to the producer twice to return the script. At a point, I went to the producer and pleaded with him to look for someone else to play my role because it was so difficult for me. I wasn’t just getting it right at all. I was just fumbling. At a point, I fled to Port Harcourt and they were looking for me everywhere.
“They called and asked me to come back to Lagos because I had already shot the film half way. The lesson I learnt from that experience was that it’s not about someone giving you a big role; the real challenge is interpreting it. But I guess it’s because it was my first lead role. Now I’m a pro. My work speaks for me.”
So, how’s the man in her life coping? The actress responded thus: “Men are just beginning to come to terms with the reality that a woman has dreams which she wants to actualize. They are beginning to realise that acting actually pays because people are becoming famous and rich from acting.
“Then, when we started, it was for the love of it. We never knew that we could make money from the industry. Nobody ever wanted his girlfriend to do movies but I am happy I have a man who believes in my talent and is giving me all the support.”
Who is that man in her life?  “I don’t want to talk about my relationship,” Mary says with a dismissive tone.
As an independent career woman, does she sometime scare men? “Sometimes yes, you know men will always be men. When you are independent they worry. They are like ‘am I sure if this one will stay?’ When you are dependent on them they are like, ‘this girl, your bills are too much.’ So, it’s like that. But when the right person comes, he will understand that you are doing what you have to do and accept you the way you are.”

Meet the world’s sexiest sports minister, and she even goes nudé! (LOOK)

Venezuela’s new sports minister is Alejandra Benitez (definitely not related to the Chelsea FC gaffer), a veteran athlete with sterling accomplishments. Benitez was the Olympic fencing champion in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 editions of the global games.
She was appointed as minister by former president Hugo Chavez’s successor, Nicolas Maduro.
Benitez, 32, became the toast of newsmen when suggestive photos she reportedly took before the 2008 Olympics resurfaced in the media earning her the title Maduro’s sexy minister.
And she flaunts it!

Michael Jordan Remarries Hot Model After Divorcing Wife

Any discussion of the NBA postseason eventually turns to Michael Jordan, the greatest player in NBA history and a strong point of comparison for today's stars 15 years after he participated in his last playoff game. That was particularly the case on Saturday, when Chicago Bulls guard Nate Robinson came up one point short of Jordan's franchise record for fourth-quarter scoring in the postseason in a wild Game 4 win over the Brooklyn Nets.
However, the day was an important one for Jordan for reasons entirely unrelated to basketball. More than a year after becoming engaged in December 2011, Jordan married fiancee and former model Yvette Prieto, his girlfriend of five years. People.com has details:
After five years of dating, former NBA star Michael Jordan, 50, and his model-fiancée, Yvette Prieto, 35, made it official with a wedding in Palm Beach, Fla., on Saturday.
About 500 people arriving by tour buses piled into an Episcopal church called Bethesda-by-the Sea, where Donald Trump was married to Melania in 2005.
Jordan invited another 1,500 to join them for the reception at the Bears Club, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course community in Jupiter, Fla., where Jordan recently built a 38,000-square-foot home.
While 2,000 combined guests does not exactly suggest a modest affair, the full size of this monstrous event cannot be communicated by words. After the jump, check out aerial photos of the wedding tent.

An aerial shot of Michael Jordan's modest wedding location (via JeffRealty.com).
In Jupiter did Michael Jordan a stately pleasure dome decree (via JeffRealty.com).
If the photos don't communicate the scale, JeffRealty.com has more information on the production:
Michael Jordan’s Wedding Tent is 40,000 sq ft, 5000 sq ft larger than his 35,000 sq ft home in the elegant and classy Bears Club in Jupiter, Fl. As you can see from the aerial, Jack Nicklaus has graciously allowed Jordan to place the largest tent in wedding history on the driving range of his renowned golf course in order to house the only 2,200 invited guests! [...]
The sound system for the affair arrived in four semi-trailers and the band spent the entire day Friday rehearsing for the BIG EVENT. Golfers had a great time on the course, with a backdrop of music to play to.
So, to recap, Michael Jordan's wedding reception occurred in a temporary tent larger than his own house, complete with bathrooms big enough to host a separate large wedding and a dance floor with its own lighting effects system. What an intimate affair!
This is Jordan's second marriage. In 2006, he split with Juanita, his wife of 17 years, in what Forbes called the costliest divorce ever. He has two sons and one daughter from that marriage.
There are as yet no details on the content of Saturday's ceremony and/or reception, so we can only speculate if His Airness wore special Air Jordans or how many buttons were on his suit jacket. It's safe to guess that several of Jordan's former teammates were in attendance, although chances are he didn't invite Craig Ehlo.
Also, while it may seem odd for the owner of an NBA franchise to schedule his wedding during the playoffs, please remember that Jordan presides over the Charlotte Bobcats, the second-worst team in the league this season at 21-61. I'm pretty sure both MJ and Prieto knew their schedule would be free.

Rihanna Now Following Drake After Chris Brown Break Up

My, my, what have we here?

Last night Robyn Fenty got on some ol’ f**k a Chris s#!t” and hit “follow” on Drake’s Instagram page.

RihRihIG

Chris Brown has made it very clear that he doesn’t have any love for Aubrey Graham. He’s probably blowing her text messages UP right now.

RihRihIG2

Apparently Rih-Rih likes what she sees.

God save Drake the day Chris sees a flirty comment he left on Rihanna’s Instagram. Laugh if you want to, but social media will get a ninja invited to a fade nowadays.

Dad Gets Sons High By Feeding Them Meth-Laced Cookies

A father is accused of spiking cookies with meth and feeding them to his children so his wife would fail a drug test, it emerged today.
Chad M. Holm, 37, from Des Moines, Washington, is accused of giving the drug-laced cookies to his five and seven-year-old sons who then both tested positive for meth.
He is also accused of forging a drug test result to mask his substance abuse which would be used in an upcoming custody trial.
According to Seattle Pi, Holm was married to the mother of his children for several years before they split up in April 2011.
They would often use meth together.
The two boys were placed with Holm while the mother went through a voluntary drug program.
She was clean for almost a year until she tested positive for meth in September, though she claims she had not taken any drugs.
She then remembered the cookies her sons had brought home that ‘tasted terrible’.
She said she and her five-year-old son split one cookie but could not eat it all because it tasted funny.
The woman suspected Holm or his girlfriend were trying to sabotage her perfect drug test record before the upcoming child custody trial.
A leftover part of the cookie was tested and confirmed the presence of meth.
Holm denied spiking the cookies and denied that he used the drug or even had it in his possession.
When police combed through past drug test results submitted by Holm, they found he had forged the test results before submitting them to the court.
For filing the alleged forgery, prosecutors have charged the 37-year-old with second-degree perjury.
No one has been charged in the apparent drugging of the young boys.
On her Facebook page today, the mother congratulated herself on being one year sober.
She wrote: ‘I want to say thank you to my family and friends for standing by my side now that I’m sober, and for not backing me up while I was stuck in my sickness.
I”m so grateful for my new connection with God, and that I found the rooms of AA/NA.’

I don’t want to charm too many women – Sound Sultan

Lanre Fasasi a.k.a Sound Sultan discusses his career and also sheds light on his personality

You have been on stage for 12 years but you are not as aggressive as some of your colleagues.
It is not the aggression that matters but outliving one’s first performance.  I am happy that after 15 years, I have been able to remain relevant and I am still getting invites to perform at shows.    It is really important for us to bear in mind that humility sustains a successful career.  If you say I am not aggressive, that is because I am just being humble.
How was your tour of the United States of America?
It is very hard to do concerts   internationally— there are lots of heavy-weights involved in the business. You need sponsors too. Right now, I’m trying to put a DVD together.
What inspires you when you are writing songs?
I look at my situation; I look at the immediate environment and try to talk about everything that has happened now and in the past.  I have a wonderful memory, I remember things easily.
You appear like an extremely shy person
Yes, every artiste has that, even the international ones, but I have come to realise that I cannot extend my shyness to making money.  I was an introvert but I am not that anymore. Now, I am an extrovert and I make money with aggression.
Do you sometimes feel intimidated?
No. There is no way I would feel intimidated because I always have something to say. But when I am alone and just being me, not Sound Sultan, I just want that privacy for a little while.  My approach is that if you don’t have anything to say, then keep quiet. People have made a lot of mistakes from talking without thinking.
What puts you off about people?
I can’t stand fake people.  Some youths feel they should behave like white people, it is so bad that  they cannot even identify with their parents sometimes, but I feel  people should  be proud of who they are.
What was your parents’ reaction when you opted for a career in music?
My parents supported my brother and I 120 per cent. All they said was that we should make sure we go to school.

Apart from Baba Dee, who else was your role model when you were growing up?
When I was growing up, role models were very hard to come by, unlike now ,when there are so many players in the game, even though some people are still very stingy with their knowledge and experience. Back then, you could hardly come around a star, you would just be looking at them from afar.  But having Baba Dee  as my brother  was  a leverage,  he was already  several  steps  ahead of me  and he had already seen the game in different lights. He was going for competitions then and I was always backing him up.   I also had a lot of influence from Fela, Wyclef Jean, Tracy Chapman, Shade Adu and a few others. I never listened religiously to any artiste in those days but I always made sure I took a healthy dose of each artiste. I did not take too much so that the musician’s style would not reflect in my music.
What has fame done to you?
I know a lot of young guys get carried away easily when they come into the scene newly. I giggle when I see that because sometimes you get tired of certain habits. I don’t know how long they can put up with such acts before getting tired.  I have related with international artistes and I have seen how wealthy they are and still, how grounded they are. I was level-headed before I met Wyclef Jean in 2010 but after that meeting, I became more level-headed. Whenever Wyclef, a multiple award-winning musician, calls me to inform me that he would be in Nigeria for my show, I am amazed at his modesty. Meanwhile, you would be begging Nigerian artistes to come to your show.
Where did the name, Sound Sultan, emanate from?
Then, my brother and sister were making fun of my previous name.  I was doing everything then, I was a rapper and I was an instrumentalist. So, they asked me if I wanted to continue my career with my funny name. I told them to give me another name and they said since I wrote different styles of music,   they would call me Sound Sultan— King of sounds. It’s like being a jack of all trades, master of all.
What does style mean to you?
If I was a new guy in the game, I would submit to the fashion craze that is currently going on in the industry.    Everybody is going around asking, ‘who are you wearing?’ If I were a new guy,  I would be worried about who or what I am wearing but as it is, anything that comes to mind and which  I want to define myself with, is what I come out with.  Style is not about being trendy or doing what is in vogue.
But you do like fez caps
I have always used fez caps to cover my face since I was in school because of my shy nature; I still use them to shield my face.
Why don’t you wear  sunglasses?
I don’t want to charm too many people again because I am married.
How did you meet your wife?
I just met her.
How did she scale through your female admirers?
It would have been hard for her to scale through them, she was not a part of that crowd, she grew up in my neighbourhood, and I watched her grow up.
She was not a fan who was all over you?
She was not, I was begging her to even hear my song.
So how did you eventually date her?
I did  not talk to her in the neighbourhood because I did not want people to start talking about the relationship. I always met her somewhere away from the neighbourhood.
What’s next for Sound Sultan?
My sixth album is dropping very soon, I am excited, and we are planning a tour with my management outside the country. My artistes are recording their album as well. I keep my fingers crossed, God is in control

My Mr. Right must behave well — Maryam Elisha

Background
I am Maryam Elisha. I am a former beauty queen but I have turned a designer. I also publish Urban Style, a fashion magazine. I am from Kebbi State. I am the last of seven children- six females and a male. Our father was in the military, so growing up was fun for me. I had my childhood in Kano, which was the last place my father worked before he retired. I studied English  at the University of Lagos. I was a model.
Modelling
About eight years ago, a guy who convinced me that I would excel as a model approached me on the street. I decided to try it and I got a mouth-watering pay for my first job. It was N5m! I was a photography model and I was still in the secondary school. I had my parents and siblings to guide me so there was nothing like wasteful spending. I decided to quit eight years after when the younger models would tell me that I had paid my dues by virtue of the big jobs I had done and I should quit the scene for them.
Beauty pageants
I won Miss Valentine Nigeria in 2007. At some point, I fell in love with pageantry and I decided to try it since I was already a model. Both worlds are similar in some ways. It was a fun experience and I liked the aspect of doing charity work, which was a motivating factor for me. During my reign, I set up a foundation, Save Tomorrow Today, where I was caring for less privileged children especially those on the streets. The foundation is still in existence and we have not relented in rehabilitating street kids.
Fashion designing
My fashion house cropped up while I was sourcing funds for my foundation.  Five years ago, I opened a fashion house because I needed a major source of income. I had to go to the New Jersey Fashion School in the United States America to be trained. When I started, I met with many designers who are on top of their game and they advised me on how to carve a niche for myself. I started with people I know and gradually, I started having other clients.
Publishing
I just thought to myself that since I have a clothing company, why not start publishing a fashion magazine? I believe it would help sell this brand and promote fashion in Nigeria and Africa.  So, I started a fashion magazine in partnership with a friend.
Fame
It has had both positive and negative impacts on me. Firstly, I do not even consider myself famous. Fame comes with many responsibilities as people look up to you and everybody wants you to help them, which is not exactly possible. Apart from that, it has been fun getting recognition and respect from people when you go to places. I get favours and recommendations from people.
Leisure
I love to hang out with children. I go to the movies with my nieces and nephews. Sometimes, we just stay back at home, I cook for them, and we watch cartoons and play video games together. I also like to travel and Paris is my favourite destination.
Fashion
Style is how you want to portray yourself and how you want to be viewed. I wear all kinds of things from simple to not so simple outfits. My mood and occasion determines what I wear. I do not really have a fashion fetish but I know I like Louis Vuitton products.
Relationship
Though I’m wearing an engagement ring, I do not intend to talk about my personal life but I am hoping to get married soon. My Mr. Right has to be God fearing and well behaved.

Micheal Jackson's Daughter Reunited with Her Mother (LooK)

ET has exclusively obtained the first photo of the late Michael Jackson's daughter, Paris Jackson, reuniting with her mother Debbie Rowe.

The two were spotted celebrating Paris' 15th birthday at Ahi Sushi in Studio City, Calif. on April 3, 2013.

According to Rowe, former wife to the late King of Pop, the two celebrated with a day of shopping and quality mother-daughter quality time.

Paris tweeted on her birthday: "Thank you everyone for all the birthday wishes !! you guys are beautiful and i love you !!"

Rowe, 54, married Jackson on November 14, 1996, in Sydney, Australia, and later divorced the music icon in Oct. 1999. They had two children together: Prince Michael Jackson Jr., born February 13, 1997, and Paris Jackson, born on April 3, 1998.  Both kids live with Michael's mother, Katherine Jackson, who also looks after the singer's youngest son, Prince Michael Jackson II, age 11.

In an interview with ET this past year, Paris had some advice for kids of famous parents, saying simply, "Stay humble. Don't let things get to your head."

Justin Bieber Posts Nakèd Photo of Him and Selena Gomez Loving Up (LOOK)

It appears Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are happily "Jelena" once more.

The Biebs, 19, posted a semi-racy photo of the apparently-on-again couple to his Instagram account on Friday night.

In the black and white picture, a shirtless Justin is seen working on his laptop, while Selena sits behind him, with her arms wrapped around his waist.

"'You've been makin music for too long babe come cuddle' - her," Justin captioned the pic.

The photo is the latest in a string of hints dropped by the couple suggesting they've reunited since their Novemeber 2012 breakup.

Last weekend, Justin posted - then quickly deleted - a photo of himself and the "Come & Get It" singer getting very cozy.

The photo tease came on the heels of a report that the duo was spotted packing on the PDA in Norway, as previously reported on AccessHollywood.com.

"They were holding hands, hugging and they kissed on the lips," a source, who spotted the pair in Oslo where Justin was performing, told People at the time. "They looked really in love, like no fights ever happened before."

Adding, "It definitely looked like they were back together."
