Interview excerpts below
Every young girl will always remember her first boyfriend, do you remember yours?
I remember that I did ‘shakara’ a lot when I was growing up. ‘Toasting’ then was just writing letters. But when I was growing up, the guys I liked never asked me out. The ones I didn’t like would always flock around me. I don’t think I remember having a first boyfriend.
It was actually when I started acting that I started having boyfriends. But afterwards, those ones I liked started coming and I told them it was too late. There was this guy, in his mind, I was his girlfriend.
He came to Lagos for his youth service. He used to take me out to eateries. So I would say he was my first boyfriend but we didn’t date. We didn’t even kiss.
Why?
He said he was very patient and he would wait for me till I was ready.
So who eventually became your first ever boyfriend in the real sense?
He is in the UK. We dated for two years. I was grown up then and I realised that I couldn’t stand distant relationship. He liked surprising me. He would come around and wouldn’t tell me he was coming. He is still based in the UK.
But you should feel bad that your marriage didn’t work out few years after you got into it?
There is always time to be happy and time to be sad. There is time to reflect and think and learn from your life. You make mistakes to learn. You don’t make mistake and go back to it or dwell in it.
But will you get married again?
Hmmm. I don’t know what to say. I am not taking life so hard. You don’t say some things when you are happy because you might regret it. I want to go the way life goes.
But are you in a relationship again?
Yes. I am in a relationship with God and my son. Is God not male? My son is also a man. He is my boyfriend now.
Would you say it was your fault that your marriage broke up?
I just thank God. I thank Him for everything.
How do you cope with the scandal your marriage generated?
You have to accept life the way it is. At least I am alive and people talk about me. Some people are alive and they are not known. Even if I die today, people will talk about me.
What is your greatest desire?
I won’t say I want to be like God, but I want to touch lives. I want to make an impact so that people will never forget me.
What if your husband comes back to you and begs you for forgiveness?
I leave it to God. (sings) I am married to Jesus, Satan leave me alone…
But you look so happy
I am so happy. Do you know that one of my colleagues died recently? I am older than Bisi Komolafe and she is dead now. I can provide for myself. Why should I be sad? That is why I am not taking life so hard. You don’t know when you can slump and die.
The Netherlands Gets First King In 120 Years After Queen Beatrix Abdicates
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands abdicated on Tuesday, handing over to her eldest son, Willem-Alexander, who became the first King of the Netherlands in over 120 years.
An estimated 25,000 well-wishers cheered outside the Royal Palace in Amsterdam as the abdication and automatic succession were broadcast live.
The crowds had gathered in Dam Square from early on Tuesday to see the new King and his wife, Queen Maxima, as they stepped out onto the balcony of the Royal Palace. Beatrix blinked back tears as she presented her son.
Wearing a sober purple dress, Beatrix signed the abdication document in front of the Dutch cabinet, Willem-Alexander and Maxima, who wore a pale rose-coloured dress with a shimmery skirt and enormous bow on her left shoulder.
“Today, I make way for a new generation,” said Beatrix, 75, who now takes the title of Princess.
Willem-Alexander, a 46-year-old water management specialist, is expected to bring a less formal touch to the monarchy together with Maxima, a popular former investment banker from Argentina.
April 30, or Queen’s day, is always a day for partying in the Netherlands. Many people took Monday off work and started celebrating in earnest from Monday evening with street bands and music.
Beatrix chose to retire after 33 years in the role, following in the tradition of her mother and grandmother.
Amsterdam has been awash with orange, the royal color, for days. Houses were covered in bunting and flags and shop windows were stuffed with orange cakes, sweets, clothes and flowers.
Nearly a million people were expected to join the street party with dancing to bands and DJs, helping create a carnival atmosphere.
The royals are broadly popular, with 78 percent of Dutch in favour of the monarchy up from 74 percent a year ago, according to an Ipsos poll.
But they have been stri*ped of their political influence, and no longer appoint the mediator who conducts exploratory talks when forming government coalitions.
The Dutch monarch is never crowned, since, in the absence of a state church, there is no cleric available to carry out the coronation. But there is a crown, which will sit on a table next to him throughout the ceremony, along with other regalia that constitute the crown jewels.
Willem-Alexander will wear a royal mantle that has been used for investitures since 1815, although it has been repaired and altered at least twice over the past century, for the investitures of his mother and grandmother. [NBC]
Pope Condemns ‘Slave Labour’ Conditions In Collapsed Bangladesh Factory
Pope Francis on Wednesday condemned the conditions of workers who died in the Bangladesh factory collapse as “slave labour,” saying unjust salaries and the unbridled quest for profits were “against God.”
His words were his toughest yet on workers’ rights since his election on March 13, and another indication that the former archbishop of Buenos Aires was intent on making social justice a major plank of his pontificate.
“Living on 38 euros (about N8,000) a month – that was the pay of these people who died. That is called slave labour,” Francis said in a private impromptu sermon at his personal morning Mass in his residence, Vatican Radio reported.
The death toll from the collapse last week of the illegally built Rana Plaza in Dhaka’s commercial suburb of Savar rose to 411 on Wednesday and about 40 unidentified victims were buried.
The pope, speaking on May Day, the international labour day, said: “Not paying a just wage, not giving work, only because one is looking at the bottom line, at the budget of the company, seeking only profit – that is against God”.
His holiness said there were many people in the world living in conditions of slave labour.
“Today in the world there is this slavery that is perpetrated with the most beautiful thing that God has given man: the capacity to create, to work, to make his own dignity,” he said.
“How many brothers and sisters in the world are in this situation because of these economic, social and political policies?”
Pope Francis has had clashes with the government of his native Argentina in the past on economic policy, as he always stick up for the poor, the downtrodden and the unemployed.
“Dignity is not bestowed by power, by money, by culture — no! Dignity is bestowed by work. Social, political and economic systems have made a choice that signifies exploiting the individual,” he said.
Later, at his public general audience in St. Peter’s Square, the pope returned to the subject of workers’ rights.
“Work is fundamental to the dignity of a person. I think of how many, and not just young people, are unemployed, many times due to a purely economic conception of society, which seeks selfish profit, beyond the parameters of social justice,” he said before tens of thousands of people.
In that address, he called on governments to tackle high unemployment and eliminate slave labour associated with human trafficking.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates almost 21 million people worldwide are victims of slavery or forced labour. Almost half are thought to be trafficked, either across borders or within their own countries.
In Italy and elsewhere in Western Europe, many young women from Africa and Eastern Europe are victims of human trafficking and forced to work as prostitutes in major cities.
PHOTOS: Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon Renew Vows In Cinderella-Themed Ceremony
Five years after secretly marrying in the Bahamas, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon pulled out all the stops for their five-year anniversary on Tuesday night by renewing their vows at Disneyland.
The pop superstar and "American Idol" judge tweeted about the lavish affair, attended by the couple's twins, Moroccan and Monroe. Dolled up in a poofy white gown, Carey made her way to the ceremony in Cinderella's stagecoach, where she was greeted by her groom and their son. Later, she walked down the aisle with them, as well as their daughter.
Coincidentally, the day also is a celebration of "dem babies," who were born on April 30, two years ago. Prior to walking down the aisle, Carey wrote, "Happy 5th(!!!!!!) Anniversary to the Best Husband in All The Land & 2 years ago pon de delivery..."
She also shared some more intimate moments of her anniversary and the twins' birthday preparations. From getting her hair done, to dressing Roc and Roe, to sitting inside the stagecoach, Carey's lambs were along for the ride.
Next up for Carey, as the "Idol" season comes to a close in two weeks, is new music. Her single with Miguel, "Beautiful," is slated to drop on May 6. And while she remains the apple of Nick's eye, the "Adorn" singer recently confessed to MTV News that he has been crushing on MC for a long time now.
"I mean I fell in love with Mariah Carey when she walked out of the pool in [the 'Honey' video in 1997]. That 'Honey' video, that was it. And I've had a huge crush on her ever since. And, so, if we ever do have a chance, you know all respect to [Carey's husband] Nick [Cannon], all love. I think I have a huge crush more on her as a musician, and I think it would be really great," he revealed.

See What Gov. Fayemi Said About The Phone Thief
Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State yesterday condemned the 45-year jail term handed down by an Oshogbo High Court to 31-year-old Kelvin Igha Ighodalo for stealing a phone.
Fayemi wondered why a phone thief could be jailed 45 years whereas culprits in N12 billion pension fund scam were freed.
This, he said, showed the kind of justice system in the country.
The governor, who said “offences must have commensurate punishment,” demanded that “those who steal the nation’s resources should be made to face the full wrath of the law”.
Speaking during the 2013 May Day celebration in Ado-Ekiti, Fayemi said although he did not want his phone stolen, there was no way a phone thief could be sentenced to 45 years’ imprisonment in a country where plea-bargaining was in existence to bail out the affluent ones.
The governor, who disclosed that politicians and influential Nigerians who stole the country’s resources were being released by courts courtesy of criminal justice administration, said the phone thief was supposed to be made to buy the phone and face commensurate punishment for the crime.
He said: “I am not saying that stealing of a phone set is good, but the dispensation of justice should not be to give privileges to the rich people.”
An Osogbo High Court had on Monday sentenced Ighodalo to 45 years imprisonment without an option of fine for stealing a Sony Erricson phone valued at N50,000 belonging to Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola on November 27, 2010 and impersonating the governor to defraud some individuals.
The governor threatened to move against workers that engaged in partisan politics in the state, saying such civil servants should resign their positions.
Fayemi, who said some civil servants had been carrying out political activities unabated, said such workers would be held accountable for their conduct when apprehended by appropriate authorities.
Workers in the state, who gathered at the Kayode Oluyemi Stadium, Ado- Ekiti, shelved their yearly march past to honour the late Deputy Governor, Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka, who died of cancer on April 6.
The state Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Kolawole Olaiya, blamed corruption, insecurity, militancy and other vices in the country on bad leadership, saying Nigerians should strive to put those that would be responsive to their yearnings and aspirations in leadership positions.
The labour leader, who urged the state government to embark on mass recruitment into the civil service to reduce the rate of unemployment, made a case for improved welfare for workers in the state.
Olaiya advised the government on what to do to improve its revenue base, including establishment of farm plantations and farm centres in the 16 council areas, establishment of food storage, construction of mechanic villages, soap processing factory, garri mill operation and plantain factory.

JTF arrests Boko Haram kingpins, demolishes bomb factories
The military-led Joint Task Force, JTF, in Kano State yesterday arrested seven kingpins of the suspected Boko Haram militants in separate raids in Farawa and Sheka, in the state capital.
Assorted dangerous weapons were also intercepted during the raid, according to spokesman for the JTF, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, who said no lives were lost in the operations.
Items recovered in the suspected hideouts of the suspects included AK 47 rifles, 46 explosives of different makes as well as bomb making materials.
A building suspected to be a bomb factory in which weapons of mass of destruction were uncovered, was also destroyed after four women believed to be the wives of some of the suspects were rescued to safety.
A number of communication gadgets, including 32 Motorola phone communicator and 52 phone batteries, wires for priming suicide vehicles and a number of laptops were said to have been seized by the JTF operatives.
Commenting on yesterday’s operation, Captain Iweha said two bomb factories were demolished after the explosives found in them were evacuated, pointing out that the raids were part of JTF’s routine assignment to free Kano from the grip of terrorists.
According to him, the JTF would continue to intensify their raids as part of the measures to track down suspected Boko Haram members who have been terrorising innocent citizens of Kano State.
He recalled the success of the house-to-house search initiated by the security team, which he said is suffocating the terrorists, adding that the war against terrorists in the state is been won by men of the JTF.
Security in Kano is known to have doubled, following the attacks in Baga, Borno State, in which lives were lost and houses destroyed.
2 Classmates And Another Man Arrested For Destroying Evidence In Boston Bombing Case
Two classmates of Boston Marathon bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and a third person face federal charges in connection with the April 15 attack, federal law enforcement sources said Wednesday.
Boston police announced the arrests Wednesday morning, adding that there was “no threat to the public.” They were expected to appear before a federal judge Wednesday afternoon, U.S. government sources said.
The classmates — Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev — are both from Kazakhstan and had been in federal custody on immigration charges already, their lawyers told CNN. The third person arrested is a U.S. citizen.
The Kazakh students face charges of making false statements to investigators and conspiracy to obstruct justice, according to a federal law enforcement source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation.
All three are accused of removing items from Tsarnaev’s dorm room at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth after the bombings, a law enforcement official who has been briefed about the arrests said.
Law enforcement officials believe they helped destroy evidence that might further implicate Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the bombing by disposing of fireworks and his laptop, a U.S. government official said.
Two U.S. government officials said the charges involve illegal actions after the bombing. One official said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev contacted the three after FBI agents released photographs of Tsarnaev and his older brother Tamerlan and asked them to dispose of the items. The suspects said they did not know the significance of what they were doing, the official told CNN.
Another federal law enforcement official said two of three lied to the FBI when asked about whether they had seen the suspects or knew of their whereabouts after the bombings.
That official said the suspects threw out backpacks of fireworks from the dorm room, leading to a two-day search of a New Bedford landfill last week.
The boys’ lawyer doesn’t believe that any of these charges will stick.
Alan Dershowitz, a prominent defense attorney and Harvard law professor, said called the obstruction charge “weak,” suggesting it was meant to pressure the suspects into providing more information on Tsarnaev.“If that’s the best the feds have now, then they’re just squeezing,” Dershowitz told CNN. “It doesn’t sound like they have very much new here.”
See Why Will Smith Turned Down A Role In The Movie ‘Django Unchained’
When Quentin Tarantino’s western revenge-fantasy “Django Unchained” was first announced, casting rumors pegged Will Smith as the titular slave-turned-vigilante.
But Smith, who teams with his son Jaden in this summer’s sci-fi epic “After Earth,” tells EW that he turned down the part because his character would’ve been second fiddle to the bounty hunter (played by Christoph Waltz) who teaches Django his trade.
“Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead!” says the “Men in Black” star, whose departure opened the door for Jamie Foxx to play the role.
Smith says that before he left the project, he even pleaded with Tarantino to let Django have a more central role in the story.
“I was like, ‘No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!’” (Ironically, Waltz was considered a supporting actor during his Oscar-winning award season, while Jamie Foxx was promoted as the movie’s lead.)
But no hard feelings: Smith was a big fan of the final product. “I thought it was brilliant,” he says. “Just not for me.
Susan Peters Struggles To Remain Relevant, Why She Frequents Events Lately
Though the name Susan Peters may not be too popular to an average Nollywood lover, but that cannot be said about those who are conversant with entertainment events in the industry. This is because the beautiful actress frequents entertainment events both in Nigeria and abroad.
Susan never missed out in any top class event that holds regularly all over the country. If she is not at such event, then it means she is out of the country for another event.
Sources divulged that the Idoma, Benue State-born actress does this so that she can be relevant in the industry. As we were told, her fortune is gradually nose-diving and she needs to show her face at events so that she could go back into reckoning. Sources swore that she is not frequent in movies like she used to do, especially after pitching tent with Emem Isong's caucus in Nollywood.
Our sources said that producers rarely call her for jobs these days, and this has become a worrying factor for her. In a bid to keep her brand in peoples' mind, she decided to frequent entertainment events, which make her still relevant anytime the video of such an event is made public.
Sources further said this was a well calculated move by the actress and that it is gradually paying off for her. The sources claimed that though Susan hasn't done many lead roles in movies, she is still a subject of discussion in the media.
