Oscar winners John Legend and Common explain moving political speech

NO INTERNET, EMBARGOED FROM INTERNET AND TELEVISION USAGE UNTIL THE CONCLUSION OF THE OSCARS TELECAST.
Rapper/Actor Common and musician John Legend show off their Academy Award for best original song for ‘Glory.
As much of a high note as John Legend and Common hit during a performance of their Oscar-winning song, “Glory,” at the Academy Awards which left many in the audience in tears, the music superstars say they’re hoping that the viewing public was focused on their words.

In accepting the best original song statuette for their song from the Martin Luther King biopic, “Selma,” the duo provided one of the most dramatic moments during Sunday night’s telecast, using their acceptance speech to shine a spotlight on the U.S. prison system – heady material for an awards show.

“We live in the most incarcerated country in the world, and more black men are under correctional control than were under slavery in 1850,” Legend said to much applause inside the Dolby Theatre
