UCL: Ronaldo seals incredible Man Utd comeback win against Atalanta as Chelsea thrash MalmoBy Ben Ugbana

 

Premier League side Manchester United were in superb form on Wednesday night as they came from two goals down to seal a 3-2 win over Serie A’s Atalanta.

The Champions League matchday three encounter was played at Old Trafford, and the hosts trailed in the 15th minute through Pasalic opener before Demiral doubled the lead in the 28th minute for Atalanta.

But the game turned around in the second half as Marcus Rashford began what turned out to be an incredible comeback for United when he pulled a goal back on 53 minutes.

Harry Maguire then scored the equaliser in the 75th minute before Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the win for the Red Devils nine minutes to time.

Ronaldo has now scored 137 goals in the Champions League, and the win Wednesday night takes United to the top of Group F after Villarreal defeated Young Boys 4-1 in the group’s other game. 

In Group H, Chelsea of England thrashed Malmo FC 4-0 at Stamford Bridge to keep up the pace with leaders Juventus, who wnatched a late winner at Zenit Petersburg.

The Blues did win their game but lost strikers Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner to first-half injuries.

In Group G, Sevilla were held to a goalless draw at Lille, after RB Leipzig had defeated Wolfsburg 3-1 earlier on Wednesday to stay top of the group.

In Group E, Bayern Munich continued their winning run as they scored four late goals to thump Benfica 4-0 in Portugal.

After 70 minutes of goalless play, the German champions scored four goals within 14 minutes to secure a big win on the road.

Barca had earlier beaten Dynamo Kyiv to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive.

Nigerian celebrities have taken to social media, especially on the microblogging site, Twitter, to mark the first anniversary of the #EndSARS protest.

A year ago, it was reported that #EndSARS protesters were shot at by personnel of the Nigerian army at the Lekki Toll Gate; an action that led to the loss of lives.

Marking the first anniversary of the #EndSARS protest, popular Nigerian musician and social crusader, Folarin Falana, fondly referred to as Falz, tweeted, “365 days ago, Nigerian citizens were shot and killed at the toll gate by our own military men.

“Today, we honour them because they have sacrificed their very existence for a cause bigger than all of us. They live forever in our hearts.”

Also, marking the first anniversary of the sad incident, ace Nigerian actress, Uche Jombo, via her verified Twitter account, wrote, “20th October! A day in history! #EndSARSMemorial #EndSARS we will never forget!”

Popular Disc Jockey, DJ Cuppy, simply tweeted, “We will NEVER forget!  Flag of Nigeria Broken heart #EndSARSMemorial #EndPoliceBrutality. ‘Lazy Nigerian Youth’ are changing Nigeria and sacrificing their own lives for generations to come!!!” (sic)

Sonorous singer, Tems, while marking the sad occasion that occurred last year tweeted, “The bullets, the blood and tears. We will NEVER forget. #EndSARSMemorial.”

Afenifere knocks FG over amendment charges in Kanu’s case

As the Federal Government put forward its amended seven-count charge against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu in court, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has said the FG was not serious about the case .

The Federal Government put forward its amended seven-count charge against IPOB leader at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday.

The National Secretary General of the association, Mr Sola Ebiseni, who commented on the case in a statement, said it appeared that the case had come to its wit’s end .

The statement read in part, “With the amended seven counts charges against Nnamdi Kanu, as released by the media, it appears the Federal Government has come to its wit’s end in the case with the Biafran Leader and self-determination agitations generally.

“Without prejudice to the determination of the case by the court, it is clear that its end will certainly compound agitations on the national question, an ill-wind that will blow the Buhari administration and Nigeria no good.

“It is time that the Attorney General, Abubakar Malami exercised authoritative superintendence over his office as the Chief Law Officer and adviser of the Federal Government in a way that the interest of the nation may be served than indulge in petty politicking to massage the ego and pander to the personal idiosyncrasies of the President.

“For instance, the alleged name-calling of Muhammadu Buhari, in April 2015, even before he became the President, would ordinarily be ignored as childish vulgar abuse unworthy of a high profile criminal prosecution.”

It added, “A government that admits that mere words of Kanu has become law, either by legitimate obedience or fear, even while in detention, should think out of the box.

“The appropriate mindset is to admit that Nigeria, as a wobbling contraption of entrenched nationalities, is negotiable and that negotiations do not necessarily lead to dismemberment. Let the dialogue begin.”

Founder and Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, has commemorated with youths on the first anniversary of the alleged shooting of protesters at Lekki Toll Gate, which occurred during October 2020 #EndSARS protests.

The clergy, via his Instagram page on Wednesday, urged Nigerian youths to keep pressing forward in their fight for a better future for the country and continent at large.

“Dear young Nigerian, we adults will not hold the stage forever, you own the future. Keep moving to fulfill the dream of a Nigeria and Africa that empower all without discrimination, creating political, economic, and cultural development. Your efforts will not be in vain, ” he wrote.

In his post, Adeyemi also advised the older generation of leaders to set aside prejudices, and create an atmosphere where potentials can be allowed to flourish.

“Those of us in the older generation need to think ahead about our legacy,” he said. “Africans have suffered a lot through history. We have a duty to rise above prejudice and selfishness, to create an environment where potential can flourish, and where leadership is accountable and poised for service.”

Pastor Sam Adeyemi was one of the notable voices in support of the #EndSARS protests which rocked several states in Nigeria and some parts of the world last year.

He, alongside others like, musicians Burna Boy, Davido, and Falz; comedians, Mr Macaroni and Taaoma; and activist, Aisha Yesufu, was sued in November 2020 as vocal supporters of the #EndSARS protests.

The suit was however halted by an order of a High Court in the Federal Capital Territory in January.

Nnamdi Kanu asks his followers to fast ahead of his arraignment on Thursday

 

Ahead of his arraignment on Thursday, October 21, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has told his supporters to embark on a dry fasting.

 

His lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, disclosed this after his routine visit to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader in detention.

 

In a statement released online, Ejiofor said that Kanu was in high spirit and is ready for the Thursday arraignment.

 

His statement reads

“Thankfully, the Federal Government of Nigeria is fully aware of this date, and more compelling is the fact that the detaining authority has since over a month ago, concluded every purported investigation into the matter.

Hence, no plausible excuse will be available to them not to produce Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in court come Thursday, the 21st Day of October 2021. You must all see him live and direct on this date”, the statement read in part.

Onyendu advised his supporters and millions of followers to go into dry fasting as the D-Day approaches, because resounding victory will be ours on this date and the Almighty Chukwuokike Abiama will be given the glory and adoration in the end, Iseee!!!

In a nutshell, our indefatigable Client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is firm and strong in his convictions.

He was never taken away from Abuja to any place. He will be in court next Thursday, and nothing will stop the Federal Government of Nigeria from producing him in court on the 21st Day of October 2021” he said

Utomi, Falana to attend lecture in honour of #EndSARS, Dele Giwa

 

Political economist and former presidential candidate, Prof. Patrick Utomi, and Human Rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, are billed to attend a lecture in honour of Dele Giwa, as well as to commemorate the first anniversary of the #EndSARS protest.

Dele Giwa was the founding editor-in-chief of Newswatch magazine. He died 35 years ago. However, the event is organised by the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy, in partnership with Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, Enough is Enough Nigeria, National Consultative Front, PLAYYA and MILID Foundation

Moreso, the event will also mark the public presentation of Remaking Nigeria: Sixty Years, Sixty Voices – a book of 60 essays by 60 young Nigerians which salutes 60 years of Nigeria’s independence and points the way towards a better country. 

The #EndSARS advocacy made global headlines last October when young Nigerians across the country and in major cities around the world embarked on protests against persistent brutality and rights violations by the Nigeria Police Force. 

The Coordinator of AFRICMIL, Chido Onumah, said in a statement, “One year after the protests and the reprehensible violent response by the Nigerian Army which led to the death of unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos. It is important to cast a critical eye on that incident and see what lessons have been learnt and what needs to be done going forward,” 

 Significantly, the first-year remembrance of these protests coincides with the 35th anniversary of the murder via letter-bomb of the celebrated journalist, Dele Giwa. 

“It is a measure of the acute dysfunction of the Nigerian state that till date, no one has been arrested let alone brought to trial for this heinous crime, Onumah noted.

Napoli vs Torino: Osimhen fires Napoli top of Serie A table

 

Napoli returned to the top of Serie A on Sunday after Nigeria international Victor Osimhen scored the only goal in a hard-fought 1-0 win against Torino.

AC Milan had moved to the top of the table after battling back from two goals down to beat Hellas Verona 3-2 at the San Siro on Saturday.

But Napoli moved back to the summit after Osimhen, who had scored for his country in a 2-0 win against the Central African Republic in World Cup qualifying last week, headed the 81st-minute winner.

Napoli have 24 points, two more than AC Milan while reigning champions Inter Milan are on 17 points after losing ground following a 3-1 defeat away to Lazio on Saturday.

Atalanta were easy 4-1 winners against Empoli on Sunday as they warmed up to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Veteran Slovenian forward, Josip Ilicic, recalled to the team after suffering from a combination of a knee injury and severe depression, scored the opener and his first goal of the season when he was well served by Joakim Maehle on 10 minutes.

Ilicic, 33, got his second with a rasping shot on 26 minutes but Federico Di Francesco pulled a goal back for the home side.

Four minutes into the second half, Atalanta took a 3-1 lead when 19-year-old Empoli defender, Mattia Viti, scored an own goal before the visitors wrapped up the win when Colombian forward, Duvan Zapata, got his 100th Serie A goal.

The team from Bergamo now head to northwest England to face United, who were beaten 4-2 at Leicester on Saturday, in Champions League Group F.

Moment bear attacks pregnant woman in front of terrified children at circus (video)

A bear suddenly attacked a pregnant trainer in a Russian circus in the presence of terrified screaming children and their parents.

 

The terrifying ordeal started during an act in the ring involving two bears and two trainers at a crowded circus.

 

The pregnant trainer was doing her job when the brown bear tackled her to the ground.

 

Two men quickly intervened and fought with the animal to pull it clear.

 

 

A witness said the male bear did not back off despite multiple "blows with a whip".

 

The injured trainer suffered bruises and cuts but thankfully her unborn child was not harmed.

 

She claimed that the bear could have attacked her because she was pregnant.

 

The bloodied circus performer was rushed to hospital after the horrifying incident in the city of Oryol, in western Russia.

 

 

"I literally have two scratches and a slight bruise on my leg," she said.

 

"With the animal, too, everything is fine, and my baby, all is normal."

 

The unnamed trainer added: "Perhaps it was jealousy to some extent, since I am pregnant. There can be many nuances.

 

 

The bear who attacked the woman has now been barred from performances and it is unclear when or if it will return.

 

The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a probe into the incident.

 

"The investigation is undertaking a set of measures to establish all the circumstances of the incident, interviewing circus employees, and witnesses," said a source.

 

There have been several shocking circus animal incidents over the past few months.

 

Irina Novozhilova, of animal rights group VITA, has called for the ban of all circuses with live animals, which remain a popular attraction across Russia.

 

"No circus conditions will be humane for one simple reason," she said.

 

"Training goes hand in hand with cruelty. Circuses are always cruel beyond limits.

 

"And circuses with animals should be banned."
