ACF, Catholics beg MEND not to attack mosques

The pan-northern socio-political organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum,  and the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria   have  appealed to  the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta not to attack mosques and Islamic clerics.
They said in separate reactions to MEND’s threat   that doing so would worsen the already precarious security situation in the country.
The group had on Sunday  said it would from May 31  attack mosques and Islamic clerics, who preach hate messages to their followers.  It said the  attacks were meant to save Christians from Boko Haram.
But the ACF, through its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, advised MEND to reconsider its position in favour of assisting the present administration to bring about peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
Sani,  in an interview with one of  our correspondents in Kaduna,   said,  “I hope you in the media also know the security challenges posed by insurgents, kidnappers, armed robbers and MEND. Do not help anybody, including the youth  who relish in the use of violence in order to address their perceived grievances.
“This is because violence, rather than advance the socio-economic development of  any  country, acts as a drag on advancement. So, it is not in the interest of anybody to promote violence as a culture in the polity, since violence begets violence.
“I therefore advise MEND to reconsider its  position in favour of helping this  administration to bring about peace in  Nigeria rather than presiding over a divided people.”
Also, the Communications Director, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Ralph Madu,  urged  MEND not to do anything that could thwart the  effort of the  committee set up by President Goodluck Jonathan on the Boko Haram insurgency to make the sect members lay down their arms.
He said, “We know that attacking mosques and religious places of worship will aggravate the problem on the  ground. We want peace in this country;  let MEND drop their arms and machetes and embrace peace so that there will be a lasting peace in this country.
“All these provoked and unprovoked reactions won’t solve  the problems. The Presidency has set up a committee to look into some of these things. Let us give the President some chance. Who wants MEND to start burning down the whole place? Did anybody say that? They should cease fire if at all there is fire. Although people have been very much aggrieved with the way Christians are being killed in this country, we need peace.”
Also on Monday, security experts joined the ACF and CSN in calling MEND not to  cause another  civil war  by  carrying out its threat.
A former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji AbubakarTsav, and  an ex-Security Adviser to Rivers State Governor, Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe,  said that the militant group  must realise that  the Federal Government was already over-stretched by  Boko Haram attacks.
Tsav, in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents,  warned  that any attack by MEND on Islamic centres would embarrass President Goodluck Jonathan and push  the nation to the edge.
He called on the government to prevail on the militant group not to carry out its threat.
Tsav said, “Boko Haram and MEND attacks have already over-stretched Jonathan and so, MEND should not precipitate another civil war by launching attacks on mosques and Muslims because it was not only Muslims that were affected by Boko Haram attacks; the government should go ahead with the amnesty plan for Boko Haram because the government laid a precedent by granting amnesty to Niger Delta militants.”
Sara-Igbe said  even though the Niger  Delta people were not happy that the Federal Government had not done much to fulfil their yearnings, they   would not encourage violence or terrorism in any part of the country.
He said, “There is resentment in the Niger Delta because Jonathan has not done anything for the people;  but we will not encourage violence or terrorism by MEND; any attack by MEND on Islamic targets will lead to another civil war and we will not encourage that.”
Meanwhile, the Northern Elders Forum  has  insisted that only “honest and productive dialogues” would douse the tension between  Boko Haram  and  the Federal Government.
The NEF said  this  in a statement read  by its spokesperson, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, after its special meeting   in Abuja on the current security situation in the country.
It  appealed to both parties to remain flexible in the face of agitation for “full reconciliation.”
The meeting was convened to discuss the   proposed amnesty for insurgents in the North.
It was attended by 42 retired senior judicial, security/intelligence officers and technocrats.
Abdullahi said that the meeting also appealed to both the government and insurgents to remain flexible to new ideas and suggestions by people of goodwill from within and   outside the country.
He said, “The meeting noted the need for the conduct of the dialogue and achievement of full reconciliation in the atmosphere that encourages the building of confidence in the integrity process. All Nigerians have a responsibility to encourage the government and the insurgents to engage in honest and productive dialogues.
“The meeting notes and endorses the suggestion that the Federal Government should set up a Dialogue and Reconciliation Commission which will have full powers to facilitate, ultimately, full resolution of this conflict.”

Three die, four missing in Onitsha rainstorm

No fewer than three persons died while four persons were missing as thousands of residents of Onitsha, Anambra State counted their losses after their homes and property were destroyed in a downpour that occurred Sunday night.
Although three bodies were found after the rainstorm, the four missing people were feared to have been swept into River Niger.
Two of the bodies found were that of the occupants of a Toyota Camry car, whose identities could not be determined. They were swept into a large drainage channel and their bodies recovered with the use of a crane.
The missing people were occupants of a tricycle, which was feared to have been swept into River Niger. There was another corpse near the Kate Bus stop.
Residents affected were mainly in the Woliwo, Nwangene, Silas Works, Housing Estate, Bida Road, Creek Road, and adjoining areas.
The rainstorm caused serious flooding that swept away parked cars in the neighbourhoods.
Also affected were public power supply cables and pillars; telecommunications mast, one of which collapsed, and telephone cables.
By Monday morning, residents of the affected areas were seen packing out their soaked property and clearing their homes of the dirty water from Nwangene Canal that is being dredged.
A spokesman for the victims, Mr. Obiora  Oguonu, who is also the Chairman, Silas Works Road Residents Forum, said more than 500 houses and 3,000 homes were affected by the storm.
He said while some homes were heavily flooded, some other houses lost their roofs, and some cars parked outside were destroyed.
Oguonu blamed the flooding on the blockage of the Nwangene Canal by the contractor handling its rehabilitation. He said because flood water could not collect into the canal and run off to the nearby River Niger, the water retreated to nearby homes.
He said, “We are appealing to the government not to allow the blessing (Nwangene dredging) to turn to a curse because of the insensitivity of the contractor handling the project.”
The Executive Director of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Nwabufo Ijezie, said  no life was lost.
At the popular Onitsha Electronics International Market along the Asaba – Onitsha road, traders said they might have lost goods worth hundreds of millions of naira to the rainstorm.
Affected traders at the electronics market were moody as they tried to recover what was left of their goods, while others wept profusely.
The Public Relations Officer of the Market, Mr. Innocent Ezemenari, put the losses at about N2.5b in goods destroyed by the flood. He said most of the victims were young traders who had just been started in their business by their former masters.
He called on President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Peter Obi and all people of goodwill to come to their rescue in this time of distress.
Traders at Enamelware Market were also affected as their goods were destroyed. A source said an entire warehouse in the market was swept off by the flood that started at about 6.30pm on Sunday and lasted up till 10.00pm.
The entire Bridgehead to Upper Iweka section of the Onitsha – Enugu Expressway was a spectre of debris, mud and sand left behind by the rainstorm.

Asari Dokubo Warns MEND Against Throwing Nigeria Into A Religious Crisis

Former militant leader and self-acclaimed Niger Delta activist, Alhaji Mujahideen Asari-Dokubo has frowned at the reported threat by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to attack mosques and Hajj camps.
MEND is one of the largest militant groups in the Niger Delta region of the country.
Asari-Dokubo, who was fielding questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Monday, stressed that there was no religious war in the country and warned that nobody should introduce such crisis as its consequences would be far-reaching.
“I want to say that there is no religious war in Nigeria and nobody should try to throw Nigeria into a religious crisis that will be far-reaching; the consequences will be far-reaching. For instance, in Yoruba land, how are going to fight? In some families, the family is divided.
“The mother is a Christian, the father is a Muslim, the children are divided, there are pastors, there are missioners of Islamic organisations or in Edo State; even in our area, in my family, out of my father’s children; of my siblings, I’m the only Muslim and my 18 children are also Muslims.
“So, how are we going to fight and kill each? So, I don’t think it’s possible and I don’t think anybody should be foolhardy in introducing that agenda into the crises we already have,” he added.

NNPC GMD’s Brother Killed By Gunmen

Yohanna Yakubu, the brother of the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Engr. Andrew Yakubu, was attacked and killed by gunmen on Sunday.
It was learnt that the gunmen trailed the deceased, 47, from Kaduna as he headed towards Zango Kataf to attend a funeral.
Until his death, Yohanna worked with the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company.
The gunmen who were said to have laid  an ambush, rained bullets on him in front of his wife and daughter who were in the car.
The NNPC confirmed the killing in a condolence message to the GMD by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Ms. Tumini Green, on Sunday.

Lagos may allow religious studies in primary schools

Lagos State Government says it is considering lifting the ban placed on religious studies in primary schools in the state.
Governor Babatunde Fashola said this on Monday during a courtesy visit by members of the Anglican Communion, Diocese of Lagos West, led by the outgoing Bishop Rt. Rev. Peter Adebiyi.
Fashola said it was becoming increasingly difficult to separate religion from daily activities because religions preach peace.
The governor said this in response to the call by Adebiyi to lift the ban on religious activities in the state public schools, especially primary schools.
He said, “I assure you that we will do something on the ban placed on religious studies in our public schools. I could not agree more with the suggestion that such will improve the moral content of learning. We have also raised this at our weekly Executive meeting today that the most intelligent person has no learning if he or she has no compassion and fear for God.
“We all must serve God. And I think that it is incumbent on us to retrace our steps if we have veered off that path or to reinforce it if we haven’t. I assure you that we will do something on it.”
On security, the governor said that the country would get better if everybody contributed their own quota to ensuring safety.
Fashola said, “Citizens must be self protective and vigilant. And they must share information with the security agencies. Crime detection and prevention is not divination. It is knowledge. So if citizens distance themselves from the security agencies, they have distanced themselves from their security.”
Earlier, Adebiyi who is due  to retire from his office on April 27, 2013 said it was incumbent on religion to teach children to know God.
He said, “Children must learn to know God. When they learn this, they will know that it is not good to commit crime and other vices. These were what our teachers inculcated in us when we were in school.
“I think that the government should let us return to the primary schools for thorough religious studies so that we can rebuild our fallen standard of life.

Angry Youths Beat, Strip Ogun Monarch

Pandemonium broke out on Monday in Ado-Odo, Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State when some aggrieved residents of the town attacked the traditional ruler of the town, Oba Lateef Adeniran, and stripped him naked.

The rampaging residents also burnt down the monarch’s palace in the commotion that ensued when some aggrieved youths, opposed to his continued reign over the town, attacked him as he was being driven out of the town.
Our correspondent gathered that the monarch’s assailants, who were protesting the validation of his appointment by a Supreme Court judgment delivered on January 12, 2009, forcibly stopped the Sports Utility Van, conveying him, dragged him out of the vehicle and started beating him.

Oba Adeniran, who is the Olofin of Ado-Odo, was said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Abeokuta, the state capital, for the injuries he sustained on his head and other parts of the body during the attack on him by the irate residents.

The wives and children of the monarch as well as palace staff, who escaped with some degrees of injuries, were also said to have been molested by the assailants.

Another source, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the attack on the monarch was sparked off following an auto accident involving him and one of his rivals that could not be identified.

The source said the assailants had earlier gone to the palace to challenge the monarch for not visiting the accident victim since the incident occurred few days ago.

The source said though the monarch was not in the palace when the rioters first visited, they vandalised several vehicles parked within the premises.

“It was on his way from Ilaro that some of the rioters saw him and beat him black and blue and tore his garment. But luckily he escaped by the whiskers from being brutally injured,” a source said.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police had restored order to the town.

Thieves Disguised As Banana, Lobster Accused Of Stealing $1,000 Sculpture

Police at the University of North Carolina are trying to find a pair of thieves who stole a $1,000 sculpture while dressed as a lobster and a banana, WSOC-TV reported.
And they’re appealing to the public for help in hopes of finding the costumed criminals and two plain-clothed accomplices.
The banana break-in and lobster larceny happened at the UNC student union between March 31 and April 1 and resulted in the removal of a wooden sculpture worth $1,000.
Surveillance footage shows the crime took place around 3 a.m. when four men, including the guys in banana and lobster suits entered through an unlocked door, the Daily Tarheel reported.
Scott Hudson, senior associate director of operations at the UNC Student Union, told the paper no charges will be filed if the sculpture is returned unharmed.
But Randy Young of UNC Public Safety disagrees.
“We’re looking at this as a criminal incident. There’s larceny that was involved as well,” Young told WTVD.com. “We’re not ruling out the possibility of criminal charges, but we’ll be working with the student union to determine that.”

The Rule All Couples Should Practice

You hear so much about the Golden Rule — “Do unto others [including your partner] as you’d like done to you,” but there’s a higher standard and a more valuable rule for your relationship. It’s called the Platinum Rule.
platinum_rule_in_bed_[1]
So, here it is: “Do unto your partner as they want done to them!”
That’s right, it’s so easy to forget that your partner doesn’t think exactly like you do nor does he like the same things you do. Ask yourself: are you giving your partner what you desire, not necessarily what he or she wants? The blessing, sometimes experienced as the curse, of relationships is that your partner is not you!
So many couples default too quickly into believing they know exactly what their partner is thinking and feeling. The reality is, you may just be guessing! You can’t truly know if you don’t ask and receive an honest response in return, despite all of the historical evidence you’ve mounted to support your case. This mindset forecloses on your curiosity to truly know your partner.
It’s not always easy to figure out what the other person wants. When you first meet someone, it’s natural to spontaneously explore to find out each other’s turn-ons. Most couples, however, sooner or later find themselves following a limited s*xual script.
Don’t limit yourself.
There is incredible value (read: so much more pleasure to be had) with novelty and trying new things. In the bonds of your relationship, you have the trust and freedom to explore the vast realm of your s*xual expressions and possibilities. Hey, your partner not only has your back, they have and desire all of you!
Here are three ways to expand your pleasure as a couple:
1. Ask your partner: What are the top five ways you like to be touched? If they don’t know or list fewer than five, then explore together to help them find out! The biggest s*x organ is your mind, and the biggest organ is your skin. Move beyond just private part pleasure to find new fun ways to turn each other on. Don’t overlook simple skin-to-skin contact such as massage, showering together, holding hands, snuggling, cuddling, spooning, or stroking.
2. Each of you writes a list of your top three fantasies. Exchange lists and rank the fantasies from one to three, in the order that you think your partner would rank them. Were you right? Make a plan to do your partner’s #1 — or scrap the plan and do it now! As you’ll find out, sharing and discussing fantasies is a greatly er*tic practice in of itself.
3. Practice a week of alternating “favorites” where you honor your favorites together one day and then play to your partner’s favorites the next. Which one of you goes first? The one who answers the most questions correctly from the list below!
  • 1. Favorite food
  • 2. Favorite activity
  • 3. Favorite s*x move
  • 4. Favorite song of the moment
  • 5. Favorite smell
  • 6. Favorite trip
  • 7. Favorite couple memory
With an open mind, curiosity and the dedication to giving your partner what he or she truly wants, the possibilities for pleasure in your relationship are limitless.

Family: How To Protect Your Children From S3Xual Abuse

The rate of child r*pe and molestation has become alarmingly high. No amount of justice done can erase the trauma that s*xual abuse causes to both parent and child. Here are a few tips to follow to protect your child from s*xual predators.
1) Encourage Your Kids To Talk To You:
Communication does wonders, if your children make the habit of telling you everything, you will know if anyone is attempting to abuse them and you can prevent it.
2) Teach Your Children About Their Bodies:
Most people shy away from this but I can assure you that if you don’t teach your children about their bodies, someone else will and it might not be pleasant. Tell your children about their s*xual organs and call them by the right names.
If you speak in code, you’ll make the child believe it’s something shameful and if anyone touches them inappropriately, they might be afraid to come to you for fear they’ve done something wrong.

3). Look For Warning Signs:
The frightening truth about s*xual abuse is that it is most often carried out by familiar people. Family members and friends are the most usual offenders. Children are usually abused by people they and their parents trust.
Watch out for anyone with an unhealthy interest in your child and keep them away from questionable people. Even family members. Your child’s well-being is your priority.

4)Pay Attention To Your Children’s Whereabouts.
Know your children’s friends and their parents.  Make sure they are reliable before you allow your child to spend time at their house.
5)Understand The Signs:
Abuse is not usually as obvious as broken bones or bruises. Significant changes in sleeping, eating, mood, or other strange behavior might be signs that something is wrong.
6) Don’t Allow Secrets:
Children are very good at keeping secrets and this is a tool that most abusers use. Let your children know that you frown on secrecy and lying so that you’re never caught unawares
7) Protect Your Children: There’s only so much you can do as a parent. You can’t be every where at once. However, you must try your best to protect your children.
Don’t give strangers access to them. Don’t let other people kiss them on the mouth. Limit the number of people allowed to dress and undress your children. Don’t encourage them to walk around unclad. Give them treats often so they can’t be enticed with this.

It is your duty as a parent to protect your child, do your best all the time. If anything goes wrong with them, you may never forgive yourself. Prevention is better than cure.

For Women: Things You Should Know Before Putting On Lipstick

It’s very common to find people who wear the wrong lipstick and end up looking like clowns. Wearing the wrong shade of lipstick can ruin your make up and your entire look. Here’s how to get it right.
1, The easiest way to find the ideal lip color for you is to choose colors that are one or two shades darker than your natural lip color, according to makeup artist Bobbi Brown.
2, Experiment with shades of pink. Pink looks good on all skin tones, and works with most outfits and hairstyles.
3, Keep it simple. During the day, the idea is to look as natural as possible unless of course you are attending an event.
4, Enhance not Distort. Lipstick like all make up is meant to enhance your look not change it totally. The art of wearing lipstick is that it looks like real lips enhanced not something artificial.
For Red Lipstick:
The secret to choosing the right red lip color is in the undertones. Pink-skinned girls should opt for cherry red. Those with olive skin can wear fire-engine red. Dark skin looks great with deep reds.
Step 1, Determine your skin tone: fair, medium, olive, or dark.
Step 2, Find the right color for your skin tone:
For fair skin: coral reds or dark reds with blue undertones.
For medium or olive skin: pink and cranberry shades, and brick reds.
For dark skin: reds with burgundy or brown tones.
Most importantly, try on lipsticks before buying, ask for advice from people who share your skin tone and ask for professional help too.

Korean Singer’s New Video Gets 22 Million Hits In One Day

The world apparently loves some Psy — so much so that the South Korean singer’s new video could be headed for record-shattering statistics.
“Gentleman,” the follow-up to last year’s “Gangnam Style” phenomenon, racked up an unbelievable 22 million YouTube hits within the first 24 hours of its debut over this past weekend. As a means of comparison, Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” video collected more than 5 million during its first day online in May 2012. That means, at least in the eyes of YouTube, that Psy is officially more popular than Justin Bieber. The “Gentleman” video now has almost 58.5 million views.
Psy is no stranger to topping YouTube records, as “Gangnam Style” is currently the most-watched video of all time on the site with 1.53 billion hits. Once again, Psy has edged our Bieber, whose “Baby” video is the second most-watched with a comparatively distant 849 million clicks.
Psy doesn’t seem to care that much about his viral potential though, as he recently said at a concert in Seoul that he’s unconcerned with peoples’ appetites for his music.
“I’ve been doing this for 12 years. Would it be fair to call me a one-hit wonder just because my next song falls flat? I gained international fame almost by accident, but that does not mean that I will make desperate efforts to maintain that global popularity,” said the singer, according to Digital Spy. “I will just continue to do what I have been doing for all these years. If it satisfies people’s appetite, it will. If not, it won’t.”
